Interesante infografía sobre la toxicidad de la industria del surf publicada en las webs de Surfrider.org yEnviroSurfer. Existen datos interesantes sobre la contaminación que provoca los 20 millones de surfistas en el mundo que estiman los autores del gráfico y las 400.000 tablas de surf fabricadas al año, 6 millones de parafinas y 250 toneladas de desechos de neoprenos viejos.
Para reducir esta contaminación proponen utilzar tablas de surf de materiales ecológicos como bambú, utilizar neoprenos de materials que no contaminan, parafinas ecológicas y finalmente cremas de protección solar que no dañen a los arrecifes de coral.

Antes de 2005 era raro ver a (espuma) tablas de surf hechas de cualquier cosa excepto de poliuretano y fibra de vidrio. Todo eso cambió cuando Clark Foam, el mayor fabricante del mundo de los foam de tablas de surf, cerró sus puertas sin previo aviso.
El razonamiento de Clark para el cierre se debió a problemas de salud ambiental y humana. Espacios en foam de poliuretano emiten COVs (compuestos orgánicos volátiles) e isocianatos. Según la EPA, VOC causa irritación en los ojos, nariz y garganta, dolores de cabeza, pérdida de coordinación, náusea, así como daños al hígado, riñón y sistema nervioso central. Algunos pueden causar cáncer en animales y algunos son conocidos por causar cáncer en seres humanos. También terminan en nuestras aguas subterráneas, extendiéndose por todo el medio ambiente y por nuestros cuerpos.
De acuerdo con OSHA, isocianatos son clasificados como posibles carcinógenos humanos y se sabe que causan cáncer en animales. Los principales efectos de las exposiciones peligrosas son el asma ocupacional y otros problemas pulmonares, así como irritación de los ojos, nariz, garganta y piel. Es obvio que nosotros, como los surfistas, debemos buscar alternativas menos tóxicas. Al cerrar sus puertas sin previo aviso, Clark Foam ha creado un vacío que debía llenarse. Este vacío ha creado una oportunidad para los nuevos, menos tóxicos, las alternativas a los espacios en foam de PU creciendo en popularidad.
La alternativa más común a las juntas de poliuretano es foam de espuma de EPS con resina epoxi. Espuma EPS libera sólo el 2% de los VOC que PU hace, y lo convierte en una junta extremadamente fuerte y ligero. Tradicionales placas de poliuretano son tan frágiles, que son prácticamente desechables. Cualquier persona que se encuentre surfeando por la presión causa abolladuras y grietas en su junta de poliuretano, es inevitable. EPS / epoxi tarjetas pueden recibir una trato más duro. Las tablas de surf más ecológicas son las que duran mucho más tiempo.
La ironía es que el surf es directamente dependiente del entorno, mientras que la industria del surf se ha convertido en un desperdicio, un monstruo de tóxicos, insostenible. Esto va en contra de todo lo que significa el surf.
A través de su ciclo de vida, se estima que un 6’0 PU / fibra de vidrio, tablas de surf produce 600 libras de CO2 a lo largo de los procesos de producción, reparación y eliminación. La producción de exceso de CO2 es malo para el surf de dos maneras. El cambio climático, sin duda, va a alterar cada punto de surf en el mundo (excepto en raros casos que no están en el océano, como la de los Grandes Lagos), debido al aumento del nivel del mar. Los surfistas son muy conscientes del efecto que las mareas tienen sobre las condiciones de las olas y si el nivel del agua sube, la rompiente cambiará para siempre.
El otro mayor efecto importante de CO2 que tienen los surfistas es la acidificación del océano. A través de procesos químicos, CO2 en la atmósfera disminuye el pH del océano, provocando decoloración de los corales. Cuando los arrecifes de coral mueren, una tierra estéril se queda atrás, donde vive la nada. Es beneficioso para nosotros, como personas que practican surf, para minimizar la cantidad de dióxido de carbono que producimos. Como dice el refrán, “huevón no tienes que ayudar a remar el bote, pero al menos dejar el maldito remo fuera del agua mientras que el resto de nosotros remamos!”
Si estás buscando para el eco-amigable tablas de surf, la mejor tabla de surf que se puede comprar es un ser duradero. Las tablas de epoxy son mejores para el medio ambiente de dos maneras. En primer lugar, los espacios en foam de espuma EPS son menos tóxicos. En segundo lugar, debido a su durabilidad, tablas de surf de epoxy no necesitan ser reemplazados tan a menudo como el poliuretano, con las tablas de fibra de vidrio sí que hay que hacerlo. Esta combinación hace que el diseño de tablas de surf de epoxy una opción ecológica.
