FESTIVAL OF THE BONFIRES OF SANT JOAN, Alicante from June 20th to 24th

Discover the Festival of Bonfires of Sant Joan from June 20th to 24th declared as a Festival of International Tourist Interest.
This festival is based on the cult of the fire as a purifying element, abundant in samples pagan celebrations where the water also intervened as a fertilizing element.

Making bonfires at the start of summer has had much to do with the Sun worship. The festival of the Bonfires of Sant Joan goes back to the time when farmers in Alicante celebrated the longest day of the year for their crops harvest and the shortest night for the destruction of Evils. This tradition soon was extended to the city of Alicante.

The Alicante people, from old time, used to go to the fields to have dinner on June 23rd. At midnight, they lit bonfires, dancing around them throwing firecrackers and finally bathing in the sea. Since 1928, the party was adapted to the custom of making monuments of paperboard and wood, as humorous and satirical figures.

Weeks before the celebration of the bonfires the “NINOTS” are displayed in two categories of adult and infant. The students of Colegio Internacional Alicante with the rest of people from Alicante have chosen one of those NINOTS which would save the fire and subsequently become part of the Museum of the Fiesta of Alicante.
