Spanish Language and New Technologies
Spanish has become the second mother tongue just behind the Chinese. Considering natives and people who have learned it, there are about 530 million people speaking Spanish in the world. Furthermore, Spanish is consolidating as a second language in many institutions and today it is more common to find Spanish classes in schools and universities around the world. If we put as an example the US, Spanish is the second most spoken language with about 40 million speakers.
This interest grows with the emergence of new technologies in order to facilitate and enhance the learning of Spanish. Currently there are various language platforms such as the Royal Spanish Academy, the Cervantes Institute that offer useful tools and online texts, reports, vocabulary, etc., where students can access from home to promote the self-learning.
Moreover, if we focus on the classroom, ICTs are increasingly successful and popular among students and teachers. Lots of educational institutions implement them in order to motivate students, to create a more favorable environment and to make available to student’s hand as many resources as possible in order to make the learning more effective. Today most of these centers already have these media and also virtual platforms to interact with their students both with in-class learning, distance learning or blended learning.
For example, in Taronja Spanish School since several years we are using ICT in the classrooms with positive results. Also this year we have taken a step further with the introduction of iPads, interactive whiteboards and a virtual platform that makes much more attractive and enriching the teaching-learning process for both students and teachers.
The experience is been very positive. Besides the possibility to keep on learning outside the classroom with audiovisual materials and virtual groups to interact with teachers and other classmates, the students are the protagonist of the learning process so the possibilities in the classroom multiply.
We recommend you a very interesting article published by our teacher Ana Morató about the use of the WhatsApp application during the Spanish lessons.
